Boat Cruise at Periyar Lake

Boat cruise is the best mode in Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary to watch the wildlife from a close distance. Boating in Thekkady is arranged by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) in the Periyar Lake and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area. The land surrounding the lake is commonly frequented by wildlife.
Read More Elephants are the most common wildlife you can see on the shores of the reservoir. Apart from Elephants, the sight of Wild Boar and Sambar Deer is also possible. The upper deck in the boat is best for wildlife viewing. The tickets for boating is issued at Thekkady Boating Point which is 4.5 Km from Kumily Bus Stand. The boats are mostly crowded and better to come early and allocate good amount of buffer time for boating. Early morning and evening are the best times to spot wildlife.
The duration of boat ride is usually one to two hours. Seating capacity of the boats vary from 15 to 150. Equipped with high standards of safety, boating in Thekkady is a wonderful experience suited for tourists of all age groups. Small two seater boats are also available.

Bamboo Rafting

A comforting, yet exciting bamboo rafting through some of the dense forests of Periyar Tiger Reserve! This bamboo rafting is part of the 'nature walk' of eco-tourism project by the Periyar Tiger Reserve.
The trip usually commences by 8 in the morning and will conclude by 5 in the evening.

Butterflies with fascinating wing patterns, flowers with dazzling hues, wild animals like elephants, gaur, sambar... all are here by the banks to welcome you. This is one of the richest and most diverse bio-diversity spots in the Western Ghats. The reflection of the forest-clad hills on the lake is an arresting spectacle.
Each team comprising ten tourists will be accompanied by an armed forest guard and four guides. Most of these guides belong to the tribal communities, who are familiar with every nook and cranny of these dense forests. They are part of the Eco Development Project launched by the government.
The travellers will be provided breakfast comprising bread, jam, and fruits. Tea, snacks and packed lunch will also be served en route. The raft journey finally takes one to the catchment area of the Periyar Tiger Reserve.
Those who want to spend some more time in the jungle can opt for a stay at the Jungle Inn - a one-bedroom accommodation made of bamboo. It resembles the traditional tree-top huts of Kerala called erumadam.
